Baba Herman Ferguson joins the Ancestors. Baba Herman was a progressive and Black Nationalist educator in the New York City schools system.

An associate of Malcolm X, he was a member of the Muslim Mosque, Inc. and the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU).

Baba Herman was the organizer and director of the OAAU Liberation School. He formed the Black Brotherhood Inc. in Queen, NY, which joined the Revolutionary Action Movement in 1967.

In response to white supremacist groups arming themselves, Baba Herman formed a rifle club for Blacks in Queens, NY.

He also motivated his students like Mutulu Shakur and Abdul Majid to become active in the the Black Power movement. Baba Herman also joined the Provisional Government of the Republic of New Afrika in 1968.

He was targeted by the FBI Cointelpro program and forced into exile in Guyana. He returned to the U.S. and served time as a political prisoner and after his release fought for the release of other incarcerated freedom fighters.

He and his wife and partner in love and struggle, Mama Iyaluua Ferguson initiated the Nationtime newspaper, the New Afrikan Liberation Front, and the Jericho Movement for Amnesty for U.S. political prisoners.

I am blessed and more enriched to learn and work with Baba Herman.

His spirit will continue to guide and fight for us as an Ancestor!!!

UPDATE:

Brother Herman Ferguson returned to the Ancestors at approximately 2:45 pm on Thursday, Sep 25th while at home in North Carolina.  He had suffered with congestive heart failure for many years, and a few months ago started receiving hospice care at home. While his spirit always remained high his physical condition had worsened, particularly so in last week. His wife, and long time comrade Sis Iyalua Ferguson, says she believes that in the end he made the transition peacefully.

Baba Herman had a long and active relationship with the Provisional Government of the Republic of New Afrika (PG-RNA), with the New Afrika Independence Movement. He was Minister of Education in the first Cabinet in 1968, and in later years, among other things, served as a District Judge. The thought and prayers of the PG-RNA are with his family.

At present time  plans are to hold a memorial service in North Carolina for Baba Herman sometime in the near future.

His family will provide more information as details are worked out.

What's necessary for one to live in a world organized around similarities while not separated by differences?

As human beings we are either organized around our differences or our similarities.

Many of us are organized in a segregated environment of our own creation - a separate society called Black or African American.

Whatever experience the experience are in the world the experience is consistence with being separate and segregated and different or similar.

What's necessary for one to live in a world organized around similarities while not separated by differences? ~KA

Stop Mimicking Your Oppressor!

Black People!, Stop Mimicking Your Oppressor!

When our leadership, particularly Black elected officials, mimics white officials We loss any real tangible progress towards justice and equality We might have thought We had made.  Black teachers have always been leaders in the Black community.  But when Black teachers start telling our children "I've got mind, now you get yours", We should seriously question the leadership merits of such teachers.

Because of the racist history of the attitudes of whites towards Blacks, We expect white teachers to be heartless and uncaring about our children's education.  We are not surprised that white teachers would say disparaging and demeaning words to break the spirit of ambitious Black children.  But Black teachers who get frustrated with our children's behavior should know better.  We should expect that "trained" Blacks educators, you would think, would look for alternative soulutions to the problems of educating our overactive high strung children.

Black People!, Stop Mimicking Your Oppressor!  Revisit your African Cultural Roots and allow The Village to help you raise your children.  Black People!, allow The Village to help train-up your child so he/she does not stray when he/she is grown.  Black People!, demand that the Black People you elect as your leaders lead you out of the oppressive system of white supremacy not further into the belly of the breast.  Black People!, demand that "The Village", including Black teachers, actively engage our children for the betterment of our community.

Medgar Evers was once quoted to have said, "Every time I think about my kids and their innocence, i wonder how whites can make the youngsters suffer so.  i guess that thought keeps me in naacp work."  Of course, that was during a time when he saw naacp work as, "We're going to get Negroes registered and voting despite the literacy tests.  With that basic political power, We'll continue working toward economic strength", according to his own words.  His work was to build collective Economic Black Empowerment within our community.
Every Black Man and Woman in mississippi, and throughout america, should fully empathize with Medgar Evers' passion for justice which he expressed this way, "A close friend of my Dad's was lynched when i was 14 or so… He was supposed to have insulted a white woman.  We would see his bloody clothing still on the field months later.  Some of the blood spots looked like rust on the grass. i vowed then when i grew up, i would dedicate my life to changing such injustices."  Those of us who do empathize with Medgar's Love for mississippi, are also dedicated to changing this state, and nation, to what it should be.  For us to do that, We have to Stop Mimicking Our Oppressor!
