Help end the travel ban on Cuba.

Posted by SendMeYourNews

End the Travel Ban on Cuba

Sign the Petition!

Short and sweet: we want to get Cuba removed from the terrorist list! (Don’t know what the terrorist list is? Check out our informational video)
On March 1st, 1982, Cuba was added to the U.S. Department of State’s list of state sponsors of terrorism. Why? Because “at the time, numerous U.S. government reports and statements under the Reagan Administration alleged Cuba’s ties to international terrorism and its support for terrorist groups in Latin America,” says a 2005 Congressional Research Services report.
That was then; this is now. Visit the State Department’s website; the few paragraphs that detail Cuba’s designation on the list actually read more like reasons to remove Cuba from the list. Now is the time for the United States to show its sincerity in pursuing a path toward improved relations with Cuba. It’s long overdue that we join the rest of the world in recognizing that Cuba is not a threat, but rather a potential partner in the western hemisphere. And if not a partner, then at least not an adversary. Cuba says it is ready and willing to move in that direction. Is the United States? While the majority of U.S. citizens want to engage with Cuba, the White House doesn’t seem to be hearing us.
Play a part in making this happen. We want to exceed 25,000 signatures; and that will take many of us encouraging our friends, family, and colleagues to add their names to the petition. Will you help reach this ambitious goal? Sign and share now.
Why Cuba shouldn’t be on this list:*
• Cuba is not a State Sponsor of Terrorism. State sponsors of terrorism are governments that provide logistical, financial, or political support to groups that carry out terrorist attacks on civilians. Cuba does not.
• Cuba has made international commitments to combat terrorism. Cuba has ratified all 12 international counterterrorism conventions, and Cuba has offered to sign a bilateral agreement with the United States on counterterrorism.
• Cuba is a sponsor of the Colombian peace talks. Cuba is playing a constructive, mediating role (one recognized and lauded by the Colombian government) in peace talks between the FARC guerrillas and the Colombian government.
• Cuba collaborates with the United States in counter-drug efforts. Together, we interdict narcotics shipments in the Caribbean, and the United States government acknowledges (even lauds) this cooperation.
And, this is why the United States should take Cuba off the list:*
• Keeping Cuba on the list weakens the credibility of the entire list.
• Removing Cuba from the terrorist list would sent a positive signal to all Latin American government . . . and could well improve the image of the United States in the western hemisphere.
• The President can do it without Congress.
• Other countries have been removed from the terrorist list; it is possible. Iraq was removed in 1982 and again in 2004 (after having been re-assigned to the list). Libya was removed in 2006. North Korea was removed in 2008 (well, that may have been a mistake). South Yemen was removed in 1990 (after it merged with North Yemen).
Our point? Cuba does not belong on this list, and it is in U.S. interests to remove Cuba from the list. Do it now. Sign the petition and then share, share, share. We want to make as big of an impact as possible, and that can’t happen without you.
We. Can. Do. This.
We’re counting on you, Mavis, Emily, and Karina LAWG’s Cuba Team

* Thanks to our friends at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA)  for letting us borrow from talking points on the terrorist list that they drafted.

2013 Princeton Minority Youth Leadership Program - Accepting Applications

2013 AT THE WELL PRINCETON MINORITY YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOCUSES ON ACHIEVEMENT; APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED ~
For the third straight year, the At the Well Young Women's Leadership Academy (ATW) will be held at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. ATW is one of the only Ivy League summer institutes for minority teen girls in the country. The Academy is geared towards improving SAT test scores and leadership skills for minority girls in underserved communities entering the tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grades of high school. The 2013 program will be held on July 28-August 9, 2013 at The Friend Center. Each year, the Academy offer dynamic speakers, SAT preparatory courses, intense math and essay writing classes, tutoring, interactive studies, group activities, and field trips all on the beautiful campus of Princeton University.
The Academy includes on campus boarding at Princeton University that allows the students to experience college life in an Ivy League setting. In addition, the two weeks of learning, studying, and communing together helps the students to bond and experience the Academy from an intimate perspective. The curriculum has been developed to encourage critical thinking and problem solving skills along with emphasizing high self-esteem, which the Academy considers critical elements in well-rounded young women. Speakers include leaders from the business community, entrepreneurs, Princeton University officials, and non-profit organization staff. Goldman Sachs executives provide coaching. The sessions also include group activities and interactive studies that allow the girls to hone their team building skills.
The academic achievement gap between minority teen students and their white counterparts prompted Jacqueline B. Glass, CEO and Founder of At the Well Conferences, Inc., to create the Academy. According to Glass, "The U. S. Department of vEducation statistics state African Americans account for about 13% of the entire college enrollment. The low performance of African-American students in math and on SAT scores is alarming. Our program addresses these issues head-on."
The process is selective, as students need to meet criteria based upon recommendations, an interview, a written essay, extracurricular activities, and grade point average. Scholarships are available to students through grants and sponsorships. The F.I.S.H. Foundation has supported the At the Well Young Women's Leadership Academy for two years with a generous grant. Rakiyah White, a 2011 and 2012 participant praises her experience. "This was a very empowering leadership program! I learned so much about entrepreneurship, leadership (how to become a better leader, budgeting, and business etiquette), effective writing, critical reading techniques, and SAT prep."
At the Well Conferences, Inc. has been empowering teens through conferences and events since 2009. "The Academy seeks to empower young women locally to become effective leaders globally. By promoting excellence in education, these young women will transform their communities," states Ms. Glass. To apply to the Leadership Academy, visit www.atthewellconferences.org.

2013 Business Grants Helping African American Entrepreneurs Succeed. Apply Now!

Posted by TheBlackList-Publisher

2013 SMALL BUSINESS GRANTS HELPING AFRICAN AMERICAN ENTREPRENEURS REACH THEIR BUSINESS GOALS
-- Pepsi, Miller Coors, Verizon, Xerox, Coca-Cola and even Bill Gates himself are all giving away thousands of dollars this year in small business grants to needy entrepreneurs. --
These entrepreneurs earned a total of $150,000 in capital for their businesses from a MillerCoors business plan competition.
Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- MillerCoors has awarded more than $1.5 million in business grants to emerging minority businesses since 1999, targeting urban entrepreneurs ages 21-35. Pepsi, Verizon, and even Bill Gates himself are doing the same - that is, giving away free money to aspiring and existing business owners who need assistance.
If you own a business and have less than 100 employees, you may qualify for such small business grants. While there are many scams on the internet, there are also many real and legit opportunities from major companies such as Pepsi, Verizon, and many more.
How To Find Legit Opportunities:
Those interested in applying for business grants should place inquiries to their local councilman's office, mayor's office, and governor's office. The state of Connecticut, for instance, is giving away more than $60 million dollars this year in grants and forgivable loans. (Read more at http://blog.businessgrants.org/2013/03/60-million-increase-in-connecticuts.html)
You can also visit your local public library to check out related directories, and inquire to major corporations that are headquartered in their state. Searching on the Internet with caution is also recommended.
Finally, visit www.BusinessGrants.org - a helpful web site that lists hundreds of opportunities from corporations and foundation. The site also teaches entrepreneurs how to apply for grants, where to find them, and what not to do. The site also features a listing of relevant resources, experts, and recent news and commentary that the media has published about business grants.

WEB SITE LISTS THE TOP SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS FOR 2013
-- Thousands of summer and year-round internships available from top companies and organizations like Microsoft, Apple, NAACP, Coca-Cola, Sony, CNN, Smithsonian, and many more. --

~ It's that time of the year again where summer internships are soon to begin, and one new web site, FindInternships.com, is helping students find the right program.
An intern is an assistant or apprentice who is being taught a craft or trade. For college students and graduates, an internship is a short term job, often without pay, that allows them to practice their new skills and learn from more experienced employees. It also gives them a real life look into the day to day activities that will define their work environment for the next 30-40 years.
FindInternships.com is a 100% free online resource for students looking for summer and year-round internships. The web site posts new opportunities daily from major corporations, non-profit organizations, and local and federal government agencies. Some of their opportunities are even for students looking to go abroad.
There are many, many opportunities available, and FindInternships.com filters through each one of them to ensure that they are 100% real and legit. Some are specific to students of certain majors and career paths, while others are only for students who reside in certain cities and states.
