To Defend Haiti Is to Defend Ourselves - May 31-June 1 Conference in Haiti and Brazil

We have just received Bulletin No. 6 of the Brazilian Committee "To Defend Haiti Is to Defend Ourselves" -- which is helping to organize the May 31-June 1 Conference in Haiti not only in Brazil but across the continent.

The bulletin will be translated into English and sent to you promptly. In the meantime, here are a few updates from the bulletin, for your information:

(1) Significant New Endorsement
New endorsers and participants have come on board the Brazilian Committee, including, very significantly, the Jubilee South Network. This network, made up mainly of religious organizations close to the grassroots popular movements across the continent, has endorsed the conference in Haiti and is actively building it in countries across South America.
The Brazilian Steering Committee for the May 31-June 1 Second Continental Conference in Haiti includes Deputy Adriano Diogo (EN/SP), Councilwoman Juliana Cardoso (EN/SP), Barbara Corrales (EN/SP), Milton Barbosa (Unified Black Movement/MNU), Cicero Almeida (SOS Racism ALESP), Joelson Souza (Revolution Youth), Julio Turra (National Executive Committee, CUT), and a representative of Jubilee South Network.

(2) Haitian Senator Moise Jean-Charles Upcoming Tour to Brazil
Haitian Senator Moise Jean-Charles will be in Brasilia -- the capital of Brazil -- on April 16-18, 2013. The tour has been organized by the Committee "To Defend Haiti is to Defend Ourselves." Last October, the Haitian Senator was at the UN in New York as part of a delegation demanding the withdrawal of MINUSTAH troops from Haiti. At the meeting at the UN, Senator Moise Jean-Charles reported on a resolution adopted by the Haitian Senate on September 20, 2011 "demand[ing] the formal withdrawal of all components of the MINUSTAH forces in a period not exceeding one year, or  October 15, 2012 at the latest."
The Haitian senator's visit to Brazil will allow the Brazilian legislators, press and labor and human rights community to understand the latest developments in Haiti -- particularly the horrid consequences of the continued presence of UN-MINUSTAH occupation forces in Haiti.

More to come.

In solidarity,
Alan Benjamin
Co-Convener,
Guadeloupe-Haiti Campaign Committee

The crime of "saggy pants"?

Targeting "hip-hop fashion" deflects attention from the real issues that plague the Black community, argue Akunna Eneh and Amirah Santos-Goldberg.

Boston police arrest a young Black man

SAGGY PANTS: hip-hop fashion statement or criminal act? According to
produced by the Black Mental Health Alliance of Massachusetts (BMHAM),
wearing your jeans below your waist is a "behavioral health issue in our
neighborhoods and communities that must be addressed."

The advertisements began running in late January and feature two
young Black men walking with their pants hanging low and a Black cop
disparaging the "hip-hop style" of saggy pants. "There's something you
may not know," the cop continues. "You can be fined up to $300, be
placed in the state prison for up to three years, or be placed in the
county jail for up to two years. You still think it's cool? Pull up your
pants. Respect yourself."

BMHAM cites an archaic Massachusetts General Law as its justification
for advocating the incarceration of those who commit the "crime" of
wearing saggy pants. The law is entitled "Crimes Against Chastity,
Morality, Decency and Good Order" and states that "a man or woman,
married or unmarried, who is guilty of open and gross lewdness and
lascivious behavior, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state
prison for not more than three years or in jail for not more than two
years or by a fine of not more than $300."....CONTINUES
