Cuban 5 Pressure Campaign

Support the Cuban 5!!

Due to the U.S. government's denial to approve visas, Gerardo Hernandez Nordelo and Rene Gonzalez Sehwerert have not seen their wives since their incarceration!! Others in the Cuban 5 have not seen their parents, wives and children with regularity. The U.S. government has taken prolonged periods of time to issue them visas.

The U.S. government's denial of visitation rights is a cruel and horrible form of psychological torture. Their rationale for denial is ridiculous and baseless; none of these family members are a threat to national security.

We are asking people to fax or mail out this letter to Ms. Navanetham Pillay, The NEW High Commissioner of Human Rights of the Office for Human Rights-United Nations Office at Geneva. We are asking her to intercede on behalf of the Cuban 5's mothers/wives to pressure the U.S. government to grant them VISAs to visit their husbands/sons!!
Sign it and mail/fax to:

The March On Washington remembered, August 28, 1963

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MARCH ON WASHINGTON REMEMBERED!
On Tuesday, August 28th, the People's Organization for Progress (P.O.P.) will observe the 49th anniversary of the epic March On Washington of 1963 with a rally at the Lincoln Memorial, located at Springfield Avenue and Market St., Newark.
          Participants will assemble at 4:30pm.
On August 28, 1963, according to official figures, 250, 000 people assembled at the Lincoln Monument in Washington, DC to demand civil rights legislation. It was the largest mobilization that the nation's capital had seen up until that time. It was there the immortal Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic 'I Have A Dream' address that marched his ascension into history as both an all-time great orator and mobilizer.
          The date was chosen based on the day that Emmitt Till, a 13 year old from Chicago, was savagely lynched in Mississippi on that day in 1955. That lynching and the bold decision of Till's mother to have her son funeralized with the casket open so that the savagery visited upon him could be revealed to the world produced a collective outrage that provided the moral undergirding for the epic Montgomery Bus Boycott launched later that same year in Montgomery, Alabama and for the larger emergence of a new movement based in the American south that ultimately became known as 'the Civil Rights Movement.'
          Tragically, although basic civil rights protections now legally are still in place, the host of issues driving the March On Washington are still issues today, including police brutality, jobs, the right to vote, workers rights and resource draining, unpopular wars abroad to name a few.
          The Peoples Organization for Progress did a 381 daily protest campaign just this past year at Newark's Lincoln Monument dramatizing the current economic crisis being dangerously driven by these very same issues.
          "We rally not just to honor Dr. King and those who made that great day happen, we rally because our voting rights are under attack right now with new Voter ID requirements and because we are in real crisis right now behind the same issues that drove the March on Washington back then," said Lawrence Hamm, the founding chairman for the People's Organization for Progress emphatically.

Azania/South Africa: Emergency ILC Appeal following massacre of strikers at the Marikana mine in South Africa

Informed by the activists of Azania/South Africa who participated in the Open World Conference in Algiers (November 2010), the International Liaison Committee of Workers and Peoples (ILC) wishes to alert its correspondents and more generally the groups and the activists of the democratic labour movement around the world of the following:

On Thursday, 16 August, the South African police opened fire on the strikers at the platinum mine of Marikana (belonging to the British group Lonmin). Nearly 40 deaths were counted. Workers in South Africa and the world over are shocked and indignant at what the South African press has called unequivocally a "bloodbath"(The Sowetan) that recalls "the worst massacres of the apartheid epoch" (Business Day).

For several weeks, the strikers, together with their trade union, have been demanding a salary of 12,500 rands (i.e., 1,250 euros -- instead of the current 4000 rands, i.e., 400 euros). "We live like animals," asserted one of the strikers who, like thousands of others, lives in a hut without running water.

Singing the songs of the struggle against the apartheid regime, the wives of the miners also came out into the streets, demanding that the South African government "stop shooting our husbands and sons!"

Speaking to thousands of miners on 18 August, the former leader of the Youth League of the ANC, Julius Malema, declared, "This mine belongs to the British, who make a lot of money on it. But these are our Black brothers who have died, murdered. Even under apartheid there never was such carnage."

As for the management of Lonmin, they gave an ultimatum to the strikers; they were to be fired if they didn't go back to work on 22 August.

The International Liaison Committee of Workers and Peoples (ILC) calls upon its correspondents and more generally upon all activists and democratic labour organisations of the world to take a stand in any way that they judge useful, particularly in relation to the embassies of South Africa, to demand that the South African government:

- immediately stop the repression of the strikers;

- put an end to the lock-out and denounce the Lonmin ultimatum; and

- compel the Lonmin management to open negotiations with the strikers and their trade union on their labour demands.

Co-Coordinators,
International Liaison Committee of Workers and Peoples (ILC)

BRONX, August 22, 2012 — Afrika Bambaataa, Bronx native and Hip Hop pioneer, has signed a letter-of-intent to help create a National Museum of Hip Hop in the Bronx's landmark Kingsbridge Armory, not far from where Hip Hop culture originated, if Youngwoo & Associates, the group bidding to transform the Bronx's Kingsbridge Armory into a market/food/recreation destination is selected as the developer by the NYC EDC.

The Armory's been empty for nearly 20 years and, if YWA wins the bid, the project is expected to bring jobs and stimulate new businesses including low-cost space for start-ups.

Mercado Mirabo has pledges to collaborate with CJ CGV, the company offering the world's first advanced 4D environmental effects bringing a sensory-immersive cinema experience to moviegoers. The theater at Mercado Mirabo would be the first in the nation to have the advanced 4D effects.  Mercado Mirabo also has partnership agreements with Crunch Gym, The New York Gauchos basketball program and Brooklyn Boulders rock climbing gym and with international arts leaders Putumayo World Music, Pinta, and Grupo Ars.

Mr. Bambaataa is rounding up support from an alliance and team of legendary Hip Hop pioneers and plans to meet with the Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. to champion the project.

Carl Dix Says, "Blow the Whistle on Stop-and-Frisk" on September 13th

Carl Dix Says, "Blow the Whistle on Stop-and-Frisk" on September 13th!

Now is the critical time to go on the offensive against 2.4 million people incarcerated in U.S. prisons, everything that leads into this horrible situation and all its consequences. It's time to go on the offensive against all this because it is unjust, illegitimate and racist. This is why Carl Dix and Cornel West, along with a growing array of voices of conscience, are calling for "Blowing the Whistle on Stop-and-Frisk" on Thursday, September 13, 2012.  Go to this new video: http://youtu.be/Ik8AGCYwa70

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Defense of Marriage Summit to Draw Diverse Crowd in Orlando Bishop Harry Jackson, political & community leaders fight for traditional marriage

ORLANDO, Fla., August 17, 2012 – The High Impact Leadership Coalition, led by Bishop Harry Jackson, Senior Pastor of Hope Christian Church in the Washington, D.C., will launch a national initiative focused on the preservation of traditional marriage, as well as other pro-family issues, with the Defense of Marriage Summit in Orlando next week. Local elected officials and community leaders have also committed to participate in the event to discuss state-specific social issues.

"This election presents unprecedented challenges to the most important social institution – marriage," said Bishop Jackson.

Known for his years of pro-family work on Capitol Hill, Bishop Jackson has extended an invitation to the entire Orlando community to attend the Aug. 22 Summit, emphasizing the fight for marriage brings together a multi-ethnic and broad coalition of evangelical denominations. The Orlando Summit is the first of seven events across the nation as part of the Traditional Marriage tour.

"President Obama has made it clear through numerous actions and statements that he believes the definition of marriage is 'evolving,'" said Bishop Jackson. "Yet, for those of us who stand on the unchanging truth of God's Word, there is only one definition—one man and one woman. The only successful future for America must include God's definition of marriage. For those of us of faith, we must not sit silently by as the President refuses to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)."

The Defense of Marriage Summit will include a day of events, beginning with a private strategy session for Florida pastors, community leaders and elected officials. A pre-event rally will begin at 5 p.m. featuring Christian entertainer Minister Judy Jacobs, followed by the main portion of the program at 6 p.m. at the Church on the Living on the Edge in Longwood, Fla.

Other speakers for the 6 p.m. event include:
  • Dr. Alveda King, American Christian minister, pro-life activist and author;
  • General Jerry Boykin, original member of the U.S. Army's Delta Force, author and ordained minister;
  • Mat Staver, chairman of Liberty Counsel and dean of Liberty University School of Law;
  • U.S. Rep. Sandy Adams, Florida's 24th congressional district; and
  • James Robison, founder and president of LIFE Outreach International and the host of "LIFE Today."
The Church on the Living Edge is located at 555 Markham Woods Rd. Longwood, Fla., 32779. The event is free of charge, but pre-registration is required at www.thetruthinblackandwhite.com.

The High Impact Leadership Coalition exists to protect the moral compass of America and be an agent of healing to our nation through education and empowerment. The Coalition hosts I.M.P.A.C.T Rallies in major cities throughout the nation with the goal of providing practical strategies for everyday to affect change in their families, communities, states, and ultimately across America.
